Sunshine seems to be what my wife hates most, for it may blacken her skin. Whenever she goes, she always carries a parasol. And when she walks in the street or on roads, she would take any trouble to keep herself in the shade of a building or of trees, however small the shade may be.
It is in this simple and strenuous way that my wife satisfies a woman’s natural and admirable wish for beauty.
Like most housewives, my wife is very prudent with money. She plans the use of every yuan and bargains with dealers for even tens of cents. It is due to her thrift that we bought our house with entirely our own money and even have had a small sum in the bank. However, she is by no means a penny-pinching woman. Though she is very strict with herself, she never cares much about money when it comes to our son and me. When I told her that I wanted a PC a couple of years ago, when it was still a rare thing in our neighborhood, she asked me the price. “5,000 yuan can buy a good one.” I answered. When I left to buy, she handed me 8,000. “Choose as you like. Don’t worry about money.” She told me. She made me promise not to tell others about the price of her clothes. Most of her clothes were bought at a price below 200yuan, while some of mine, all bought under her insistence, cost more than a thousand.
She holds deep affection towards me. On some occasions, she would sit there doing nothing, but looking at me, musing and smiling, until I’m embarrassed. I really don’t know what was going on in her little head at such moments. Then on some other occasions, she would come up to me and give me a tight embrace and a sweet kiss on the face. Stricken with dizziness, I couldn’t help wondering why. There’s nothing about me that may appeal to a woman. No power, no money, no career achievements, no social position. Even my salary is smaller than my wife’s. I once ran across a poem, which roughly goes like this: I have only one cup of wine of love, if I have given a half to you, I’ll have to fill the another with water. My wife had never allowed any other boy to taste her wine until I appeared and then she gave the whole to me. Maybe that’s the reason. No wonder that her wine is so thick, so delicious and fragrant!
